Marc at chipmunkninja.com published a post back in June 2008 regarding the playback of 1080p MKVs and I just stumbled upon it.

I use VLC 0.9.9

1. Open VLC prefs
2. Click “All”
3. Click “Input / Codecs”
4. Click “Other codecs”
5. Select “FFmpeg”
6. Look after “Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding”

I use “Non-ref” for now. I fired up Blade Runner in 1080p and after a couple of minutes of playback, I haven’t seen any choppiness!

1. Make sure nothing is connected to the switch.
2. Power on the switch.
3. Wait for the setup LED to blink green.
4. Press Setup when it blinks green. One of the switch port LEDs blinks green.
5. Connect your PC/laptop directly to the switch port that blinks green.
6. Open a web browser and go to the mentioned IP address. For example, http://169.254.0.1 and use username: cisco and password: cisco

Note: For Cisco IOS Software FY series releases, the management IP address is 10.0.0.1. For Cisco IOS Software SEG series releases, the IP address is 169.254.0.1.

• Xen installation.

sudo apt-get install xen-linux-system-2.6.18-5-xen-686 libc6-xen bridge-utils and then reboot

• After the reboot

nano /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp and uncomment the line (network-script network-bridge)

• Get Xen-Tools

apt-get install xen-tools


• Configurations

nano etc/xen-tools/xen-tools.conf

• Create directories

mkdir /home/xen
mkdir /home/xen/domains


• Create a new VM.

xen-create-image -hostname=xenvm01 -ip=192.168.1.199 -netmask=255.255.255.0 -gateway=192.168.1.1 -passwd

• Starting your VM.

xm create xenvm01.cfg

• Overview of your newly created VM

xm list or xentop

• Updating packages in VMs

xen-update-image --dir=/home/xen/ xenvm01.domain.tld
