Xen 3.0 on Debian Etch

You need a Debian Etch minimal installation.

  • Xen installation.

sudo apt-get install xen-linux-system-2.6.18-5-xen-686 libc6-xen bridge-utils and then reboot

  • After the reboot

nano /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp and uncomment the line (network-script network-bridge)

  • Get Xen-Tools

apt-get install xen-tools

  • Configurations

nano etc/xen-tools/xen-tools.conf


dir = /home/xen
install-method = debootstrap

size = 4Gb # Disk image size.
memory = 128Mb # Memory size
swap = 128Mb # Swap size
fs = ext3 # use the EXT3 filesystem for the disk image.
dist = etch # Default distribution to install.
image = sparse # Specify sparse vs. full disk images

  • Create directories

mkdir /home/xen
mkdir /home/xen/domains

  • Create a new VM.

xen-create-image -hostname=xenvm01 -ip=192.168.1.199 -netmask=255.255.255.0 -gateway=192.168.1.1 -passwd

  • Starting your VM.

xm create xenvm01.cfg

  • Overview of your newly created VM

xm list or xentop

  • Updating packages in VMs

xen-update-image --dir=/home/xen/ xenvm01.domain.tld
